On 19 January 2021, a delegation from the High Commission of Canada in Dhaka, Bangladesh visited sites of different development activities undertaken by BRAC Humanitarian Crisis Management Programme to improve the socio-economic conditions of the people of the host community of Cox’s Bazar.
The delegation included Phedra Moon Morris, Head of Development Assistance of the High Commission of Canada in Dhaka; Maegen Andolfatto, First Secretary (Development) of the High Commission; and Mir Md Saifur Rahman, Development Advisor.
Sajedul Hasan, Director of Humanitarian Crisis Management Programme of BRAC; Hasina Akhter Huq, Area Director; Mohammed Norul Alam Raju, Head of Programme; and others were present during the visit.
The delegation observed the activities of Ayesha Abed Foundation at Jadimura, Ukhiya, where rural women access skill training and employment. They exchanged views with BRAC officials. They also visited BRAC’s Community Tailoring Centre where they spoke with the women working there.
Phedra Moon Morris emphasised on the necessity to take steps both at policy-making level as well as on the ground, in order to to implement the programme effectively. She also stressed on the increasing need to involve people from the community and religious leaders, so that their opinions can be heard and their needs can be better assessed.
Phedra Moon Morris also emphasised on undertaking more initiatives to prevent child marriage in the Rohingya and host communities of Cox’s Bazar.
